Assembly Objective:
This assembly uses A Minecraft Movie to help pupils explore creativity, how it can be encouraged or damaged by the words and actions of others, and how it can be used either positively or negatively. Through contrasting characters in the film and three Bible passages, pupils are invited to reflect on how they treat other people’s talents, and how they can choose to use their own creativity to help rather than harm.

- Start time: 54:46 (You got some talking to do buddy…”).
- End time: 57:17 (“This is my ultimate weapon. Kill him. “)
- Clip length: 2 minutes, 31 seconds.
Clip summary:
- Steve (Jack Black), Garrett (Jason Momoa) and Henry (Sebastian Hansen) are talking about their mission to save the Orb, Steve’s dog Dennis, the future of their world – Overland – and the physical world of Earth, which are in serious danger. They are up against Malgosha (Rachel House), an evil piglin sorceress who rules Nether. She is a powerful and dangerous character who wants control and gold more than anything else.
- Malgosha had always been creative. When she was younger, she dreamed of becoming a world-class dancer. She even entered a talent show called Nether’s Got Talent. Her dancing was creative and different, and she made it all the way to the semi-finals.
- But when she performed, the crowd reacted very badly. They booed her instead of encouraging her. Even her own family criticised her. She was told, “Why don’t you grow up? Your dancing is pathetic. Just find me the gold.”
- This crushed Malgosha. Instead of continuing to use her creativity to bring joy, she turned away from it. She began using her own creativity in destructive ways and, as she grew in power, she banned good creativity altogether.
- Malgosha used her creativity to build powerful fighting beasts and weapons. She created what she called her “ultimate weapon” and showed that she is willing to hurt or even kill everyone, even her own generals, who gets in her way as she searches for gold and power.
Bible:
- Genesis 1:1, 26, 31 (NIRV)
- 1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NIV)
- Romans 12:21 (NIRV)
Supporting Values Education:
This assembly supports values education by encouraging pupils to reflect on mutual respect and tolerance, particularly in how they respond to difference, talent, and creativity in others. It also promotes individual liberty, by affirming that people can choose how they respond to criticism or unkindness, and responsibility, by recognising that our words and actions can either build others up or cause harm.
PowerPoint:
Use the A Minecraft Movie PowerPoint for this assembly.
Opening Activity:
Choose one of the following activities, depending on time, space, and materials available.
- Option A: Minecraft Builds (PowerPoint-based Activity)
- Show PowerPoint Slide 1 (a Minecraft-style image of different builds.)
- Ask the pupils:
- “Hands up if you’ve ever played Minecraft.”
- “What kinds of things can you build in Minecraft?”
- Invite a few quick responses.
- Then ask:
- “Do all Minecraft worlds look the same?”
- “Why not?”
- Explain that Minecraft lets people be creative. Everyone can build something different, because everyone has different ideas.
- Say: “Today we’re going to think about creativity and what happens when creativity is encouraged, or when it’s mocked.”
- Option B: Build It Your Own Way (Physical Activity)
- You will need:
- Three trays of simple building materials (e.g. wooden blocks, LEGO, Magnatiles, or craft materials such as straws and polystyrene balls).
- Invite three pupils to come to the front.
- Ask them to stand facing different directions so that they cannot see one another’s work.
- Place a tray of building materials in front of each pupil.
- Explain:
- “You will have one minute to build anything you like. There’s no right or wrong, just be creative.”
- Start the timer. After one minute, ask the pupils to stop and turn to face the audience, showing what they have built.
- Ask:
- “Did they all build the same thing?”
- “Were all of the builds creative?”
- Point out that even though the pupils were given similar materials and the same amount of time, they created different things.
- Say:
- “This shows us something important: creativity looks different in different people.”
- Explain that in A Minecraft Movie, we will see characters who all have creativity, but who choose to use it in very different ways.
- Thank the pupils and ask them to return to their seats.
- You will need:
Scripted Talk
- [PowerPoint Slide 2]: (Malgosha: the evil piglin ruler)
- A Minecraft Movie introduces us to a character called Malgosha.
- She is very creative. She can build impressive things, but she uses her creativity in a negative way to build an army and search for gold. She wants money and power.
- [PowerPoint Slide 3]: (Malgosha loved dancing)
- But Malgosha wasn’t always like this.
- Before we watch the clip, here’s what we need to know so far in the story.
- Steve (Jack Black), Garrett (Jason Momoa) and Henry (Sebastian Hansen) are talking about their mission to save the Orb, Steve’s dog Dennis, the future of their world – Overland – and the physical world of Earth, which are in serious danger. They are up against Malgosha (Rachel House), an evil piglin sorceress, who rules Nether. She is a powerful and dangerous character who wants control and gold more than anything else. In this scene, Steve explains how Malgosha became the way she is.

- Malgosha had always been creative. When she was younger, she dreamed of becoming a world-class dancer. She even entered a talent show in Nether called Nether’s Got Talent. Her dancing was creative and different and she made it all the way to the semi-finals.

- Malgosha used her creativity to build powerful fighting beasts and weapons. She created what she called her “ultimate weapon” and showed that she is willing to hurt or even kill everyone, even her own generals, who gets in her way as she searches for gold and power.
- Once, she wanted to use her creativity to dance and entertain people. Sadly, other people mocked her. They laughed at her and told her to stop being creative and start searching for gold instead.
- [PowerPoint Slide 4]: (Henry is creative and inventive)
- The film also introduces us to Henry. Henry is creative too. He invents things and builds things, but he’s teased by bullies because of it. At one point, they even sabotage one of his inventions, and it goes badly wrong.
- [PowerPoint Slide 5]: (Henry works with others)
- Henry could have become angry or bitter, just like Malgosha.
- But he doesn’t. He keeps being creative. He works as part of a team, and he uses his creativity to rescue other people.
- [PowerPoint Slide 6]: (Questions)
- So, the film asks us some important questions:
- What happens when creativity is encouraged?
- What happens when people mock creativity?
- So, the film asks us some important questions:
- [PowerPoint Slide 7]: (Genesis 1)
- The Bible says that creativity matters. Christians believe that God is a creator. Right at the beginning of the Bible, God creates a world full of colour, variety, and ideas. Here is what we read in the first book of the Bible in the first chapter:
- ‘In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.’ Genesis 1:1.
- ‘Then God said, “Let us make human beings so they are like us. Let them rule over the fish in the seas and the birds in the sky. Let them rule over the livestock and all the wild animals.’ Genesis 1:26.
- ‘God saw everything that he had made. And it was very good.’ Genesis 1:31.
- The Bible says that creativity matters. Christians believe that God is a creator. Right at the beginning of the Bible, God creates a world full of colour, variety, and ideas. Here is what we read in the first book of the Bible in the first chapter:
- [PowerPoint Slide 8]: (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
- Because of that, the Bible encourages people to treat one another kindly. It says:
- ‘Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up.’ 1 Thessalonians 5:11.
- [PowerPoint Slide 9]: (Romans 12:21)
- And when things go wrong, or when people are unkind, the Bible encourages people not to pass that harm on, but to choose good instead.
- ‘Don’t let evil overcome you. Overcome evil by doing good.’ Romans 12:21.
- [PowerPoint Slide 10]: (What will we do?)
- Not everyone is creative in the same way, but everyone is creative in some way.
- We all get to choose:
- Will we encourage others?
- Will we use our creativity to help people?
- When we are criticised, how will we respond?”
Headings and Bullets
- [PowerPoint Slide 2]: (Malgosha: the evil piglin ruler)
- Malgosha the evil ruler, after gold and power.
- [PowerPoint Slide 3]: (Malgosha loved dancing)
- Malgosha’s past.
- Malgosha once used her creativity for good.
- But she was mocked and instead turned her creativity in a negative way.
- [PowerPoint Slide 4]: (Henry is creative and inventive)
- Henry’s creativity also mocked but he continues to use it for good.
- [PowerPoint Slide 5]: (Henry works with others)
- Henry works with the team to use his creativity to help them overcome evil.
- [PowerPoint Slide 6]: (Questions)
- So the film asks us some important questions:
- What happens when creativity is encouraged?
- What happens when people mock creativity?
- [PowerPoint Slide 7]: (Genesis 1: 1, 26, 31)
- Christians believe that God is a creator and what he makes is good.
- Christians believe that God created us to be like him, creative for good.
- [PowerPoint Slide 8]: (1 Thessalonians 5:11)
- The Bible encourages people to treat one another kindly.
- [PowerPoint Slide 9]: (Romans 12:21).
- The Bible encourages people to overcome evil with good.
- [PowerPoint Slide 10]: (What will we do?)
- Will we encourage others?
- Will we use our creativity to help people?
- When we are criticised, how will we respond?”
Response – Reflection
- [PowerPoint Slide 11]: (Minecraft landscape)
- Invite pupils to think quietly about:
- Something you are good at or enjoy creating.
- How will you speak to others about their talents?
- One way you could encourage someone else today.
- Invite pupils to think quietly about:
Prayer
“Dear God, Thank you for making us all different and creative in our own ways. Please help us to encourage one another, to use our gifts to help others, and to choose good even when things are difficult. Amen.”
