Ethos Education

Moana 2

Assembly Objective:

Want to be in our team? This assembly explores how the church is made up of diverse people with different skills who share a common vision and purpose. Using biblical teaching about how a body contains many parts, all of which are necessary, the assembly encourages good teamwork and respect for difference.

Bible:

Psalm 139:13-14; Ephesians 2:10; 1 Corinthians 12:14-20 (New International Reader’s Version)

Supporting Values Education:

The value of democracy is upheld by the belief that everyone has a part to play in society. The value of individual liberty is supported by the social contract that expects members of society to take responsibility for their actions. This assembly helps pupils think about how rights and responsibilities co-exist.

OPENING ACTIVITY

The Barter Puzzle (puzzle)

You will need three to four easy jigsaw puzzles (fewer than fifty pieces) – you could pick these up from a charity shop, or borrow them. If you have a small group of pupils, everyone can take part, but if not create as many teams as you have puzzles. Give each team a puzzle and tell them that the aim is to solve the puzzle before any of the other teams.

To make the experience more interesting, mix up some of the pieces from the puzzles in advance so that the groups have to negotiate and trade to complete the task. If you do this, make sure that you distribute the pieces fairly and that the pictures are equally hard to complete.

Award a small prize to the team who finishes first.

Moana has set off to sea with an unlikely crew. She is familiar with the ocean as the ‘wayfinder’ and feels completely at home at the top of the mast, breathing the sea air. She is interrupted by a banging as Loto (one of the crew) attempts to make improvements to the boat. These simply make everything worse. Meanwhile, Moni (who is meant to be manning the oar) has been distracted by a drawing he’s working on. As the boat sways wildly, Moana tells them the ocean is relying on them and they need to stay on course. She then asks where the farmer is. The farmer is huddled below deck growing a garden. He asks when the canoe will stop moving. Everything is chaotic and Moana says they need to embrace the ocean. They all begin to complain, but Moana stamps her feet in a dance to attract attention then tells them they need to come together and find their rhythm. She sings a song, asking them to lift their eyes and look at the ocean and sky. Eventually everyone joins in with the song singing that ‘What Could Be Better Than This?’. Through the song we discover that Moni is creative and enthusiastic, Loto is an engineer and, although the farmer can’t swim, he can try to learn. The song ends with an explosion in the sky which distracts everyone except for Moni who finishes the final note.

  • [PowerPoint slide 1]
    • Welcome to our assembly today.
  • [PowerPoint slide 2]
    • I’d like us to begin by thinking about what we are good at. How many people are good at playing sport? Who is good at maths? Who can play a musical instrument? Who is good at drama? Who’s a good dancer? Who likes baking? Who is a keen artist?
  • [PowerPoint slide 3]
    • Sometimes we are quite shy about our talents. I wonder what would happen if we thought about the people in our class, and tried to work out what everyone’s top skill is. Each of us has different skills and talents. Some of us are brilliant at physical activity – we can run, jump and play ball games with lots of skill. Some of us are creative – perhaps we can dance or paint or come up with good ideas. Others are good at organising other people – they know exactly what to do in a difficult situation, or they are good at being a peacemaker. Other people are particularly kind or welcoming, and some people have enquiring minds that like to figure out how to solve a problem.
    • We are all different, but we all have skills.
  • [PowerPoint slide 4]
    • In today’s assembly we are going to think about how we use our talents and skills well, and how we can work together as a great team.
    • Speaking of teams, who has ever played in a team? It might be a sports team, a musical group, a team in the Brownies or Cubs.
  • [PowerPoint slide 5]
    • What are some of the good things about being part of a team?
    • [Take suggestions – sense of togetherness, how it feels when you win or play well, it’s good fun, you can do more together than you can apart].
  • [PowerPoint slide 6]
    • When is it difficult to be part of a team?
    • [When other people let you down, when you make a mistake and let the team down, when you can’t be bothered, when someone is bossy or leaves you out].
  • [PowerPoint slide 7]
    • We’re going to watch a clip from the film Moana 2. Moana has been given the title ‘Wayfinder’ and she is on a mission to find the island of Motufetu in order to save the people of her own island, Motunui. She has assembled a team to travel with her – Loto (who is crafty), Moni (a historian), Kele (a farmer) and her pet pig and rooster. The team has set sail but not everyone is as a comfortable on the water as Moana is. Let’s watch and see how this team gets on.

    • Moana had a hard job trying to lead the crew of her boat. Did you notice how everyone on board had a different talent or skill, but nobody was working together? When you’re in a team, it’s not enough just to be good at what you do, you also need to have a goal.
  • [PowerPoint slide 9]
    • Think about a football team. If all the players in the team were goalkeepers, nobody would ever score any goals! And if everyone was a striker, the players would probably be fighting with one another to try and get the ball.
  • [PowerPoint slide 10]
    • It’s the same with an orchestra. If you only had violins in the orchestra there would be no bass or percussion. And if you only had drums, there would be no melody to hear!
  • [PowerPoint slide 11]
    • To be a good team, everyone needs to know their talent, and everyone needs to work towards a goal together.
    • The Bible can help us think about our talents, and about how we work together.
    • Firstly, the Bible tells us that we are created by God. Here are some verses that tells us that:
  • [PowerPoint slide 12]
    • Psalm 139:13-14.
    • You created the deepest parts of my being.                                                                                                                  You put me together inside my mother’s body.                                                                                                          How you made me is amazing and wonderful.                                                                                                                  I praise you for that.                                                                                                                                                        What you have done is wonderful.                                                                                                                                       I know that very well.
    • So, if anyone is sitting here today thinking ‘I don’t have any special talents. I’m not good at anything’ then these verses tell you that you are amazing and wonderful, just because you exist!
    • Not only that, but another verse in the Bible tells us that:
  • [PowerPoint slide 13]
    • Ephesians 2:10.
    • We are God’s creation. He created us to belong to Christ Jesus. Now we can do good works. Long ago God prepared these works for us to do.
    • So, we are created to be amazing and wonderful, AND God gives us good things to do with our lives. That might mean there is a job that we are particularly suited to, or it might mean that we have the ability to help others, or perhaps we are creative and can invent amazing things.
    • But, the Bible also talks about how we are to use the gifts and talents God gives us. Here are our final verses from the Bible:
  • [PowerPoint slide 14]
    • 1 Corinthians 12:14-20.
    • So the body is not made up of just one part. It has many parts. Suppose the foot says, “I am not a hand. So I don’t belong to the body.” By saying this, it cannot stop being part of the body. And suppose the ear says, “I am not an eye. So I don’t belong to the body.” By saying this, it cannot stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, how could it hear? If the whole body were an ear, how could it smell? God has placed each part in the body just as he wanted it to be. If all the parts were the same, how could there be a body? As it is, there are many parts. But there is only one body.
  • [PowerPoint slide 15]
    • We are created to be amazing and wonderful. We have good things that God gives us to do with our lives. And God wants us to work together to make a difference.
  • [PowerPoint slide 16]
    • A team is like a body. If a body was only one big eye it wouldn’t get far. And if it was just one big ear it couldn’t see or smell. A body is made up of parts in the same way that a football team needs a goalkeeper, a striker and nine other players. A body is like an orchestra that needs violins, drums and all sorts of other instruments to make the best possible sounds!
    • The challenge for us today is to think about how we can work together like a body or a football team or an orchestra. We can start by noticing what we’re good at and noticing the talents that other people have. We then need to learn to use all our talents and abilities well together.
  • [PowerPoint slide 17]
    • When Moana’s crew joined in with the song they found that they were all important members of the team, and because of that they were able to work together and search for the missing island.
    • I wonder what you could accomplish if you worked as a team with those around you?

RESPOND

Reflection: Poem

  • [PowerPoint slide 18]
    • There is a poem by Teresa of Avila, a nun who lived in the 1500s. Her poem reminds people who follow Jesus, that when they do good things for other people, they are acting like Jesus’ body on earth.
    • Read the poem aloud and invite pupils to listen.
    • Christ has no body but yours,                                                                                                                                            No hands, no feet on earth but yours,                                                                                                                        Yours are the eyes with which he looks                                                                                                                Compassion on this world,                                                                                                                                            Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,                                                                                                  Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.                                                                                      Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,                                                                                                                      Yours are the eyes, you are his body.                                                                                                                          Christ has no body now but yours,                                                                                                                                   No hands, no feet on earth but yours,                                                                                                                         Yours are the eyes with which he looks compassion on this world.                                                                     Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

Prayer

Father God                                                                                                                                                                                  Thank you for the talents and skills you’ve given me.                                                                                                          Help me to remember that I’m amazing and wonderful.                                                                                                    Help me to use my talents and skills to help others in my team and in the world.                                                   Amen.
