    • Welcome everyone to our assembly this morning. It is based on the film, Lightyear. The main character in the film is, of course, Buzz Lightyear, who many of you will already know from the Toy Story films. In this film, Buzz is a Space Ranger who believes that he must always finish whatever mission he is given. He is very extremely focussed and determined, preferring to work on his own rather than with other people.
  • [PowerPoint slide 2]
    • This morning I am going to assign someone their own special mission. (Ask for a volunteer.) Your mission is to lift the chair I will place in front of you. But, you can only lift the chair with one hand and by holding on to only one leg. The chair must be lifted straight up in the air without wobbling. (Allow the volunteers several unsuccessful attempts to lift the chair before allowing them to recruit helpers. Once they successfully lift the chair, ask the volunteers how they accomplished their mission.)
  • [PowerPoint slide 3]
    • Buzz would have really struggled to complete the mission I set you this morning because he prefers to work alone. His single-mindedness is one of his greatest strengths, but it is also his greatest weakness.
  • [PowerPoint slide 4]
    • In the film, Buzz is responsible for crashing his spaceship ‘The Turnip’ on a hostile planet. He and all his crew mates are stranded, very far from home.
  • [PowerPoint slide 5]
    • Buzz spends the next few decades testing out a new fuel combination that will allow him and his crew mates to return home.
  • [PowerPoint slide 6]
    • His crew mates build a new world on the planet. They grow old, get married, have children and grandchildren and die. Buzz, however, never gets old because for every minute he spends at supersonic speed in his spaceship, a year passes on the planet below.
  • [PowerPoint slide 7]
    • When he returns from his final (successful) test flight, he discovers the planet has been invaded by giant robots led by their commander, Zurg.
  • [PowerPoint slide 8]
    • He is rescued by Izzy, the granddaughter of his old commanding officer. She tells Buzz that she has the necessary plan and team to defeat the robots and return everyone to their home planet.

    • (Allow children and the teachers to discuss the clip). Why wasn’t Buzz impressed by Izzy and her team? What might have happened to Buzz without them? Who do you consider to be the people in your team? How did your team come together? What would life be like without your team?
  • [PowerPoint slide 10]
    • Somehow, and despite his best efforts to get rid of them, Buzz is joined on his mission by Izzy, Mo, Darby and Soz the cat. The spaceship they are travelling in crashes and they need to find a replacement part to fix it. They hope to find the replacement part in the control room of an abandoned mine.

    • (Allow children time to reflect upon the clip.) What does the clip teach you about teamwork? What would have happened if Buzz had not joined the others? How might you have reacted to Mo accidentally setting off the alarm? When have you ever worked together as part of a team to achieve something? What qualities make a person a good team member? How do you think Buzz feels about the team after this episode?
  • [PowerPoint slide 12]
    • Buzz comes to realise that he needs other people. Together, Buzz and his team defeat the robots and free the other humans trapped in the city. But Buzz decides that he does not want to escape from the planet anymore. The planet has become his home and Izzy, Mo, Darby and Sox have become his team!
  • [PowerPoint slide 13]
    • Christians believe that God in the person of Jesus came to Earth on a mission. His mission was to make the world a better place for everyone. Although He is God and can do everything, Jesus chose to surround himself with a team. They spent three years together and, at the end of this time, Jesus sent them out on their own mission. He said…
  • [PowerPoint slide 14]
    • (Share the Bible verses with the children). What do these verses mean to you? How do you think Christians feel knowing that Jesus is always with them? Which teachings of Jesus do you know?
  • [PowerPoint slide 15]
    • Jesus said these words 2,000 years ago but the mission He gave His team is not finished. Christians believe that the mission will be finished when Jesus returns and makes a new world. But everything good that’s been achieved in this world, no matter how small, will remain in the new world to ‘eternity and beyond’.
