OPENING ACTIVITY

Sandmen (activity)

  • Soon we’re going to watch a clip from Rise of the Guardians. The villain of this movie is called Pitch Black. He is the Nightmare King, who turns wonderful dreams into horrible nightmares. In the film, the Guardians fight Pitch using the power of fun. Let’s have a go at turning nightmares into funny dreams.
  • [Ask the children to come up with some scary nightmares. Then, invite the whole group to imagine ways to make that scenario funny. For example, the nightmare could be a child being cornered by a giant spider, but it could be made funny by picturing the spider wearing roller-skates, unable to gain his balance.]

Fun for All (competition)

  • Show off your selection of sweets, but explain that they must be won. Invite some volunteers up to the front to play ‘Trick for your treat’. In order to win a sweet, they must perform a party trick. You could turn this into a competition, with a larger reward for the winner, but ensure every entrant is treated in some way. You could discuss ways of making the Halloween tradition of ‘Trick or treat’ fun for those giving sweets out, as well as those receiving them.

FILM CLIP

  • Play the clip from Rise of the Guardians (DreamWorks, 2013) certificate PG

    • End time: 01:15:38 (waves of magical sand sweep around the children and Guardians as they laugh and say ‘Wow!’)
    • Clip length: 3 minutes and 24 seconds
  • If you cannot play the clip, then read the description below instead:
    • The Boogeyman corners the Guardians and Jamie. The Boogeyman seems to have won – what could they possibly do to him? Jamie is scared. But, Jack Frost decides to fight the Boogeyman with fun! He throws a snowball at him. Then all the Guardians sledge around the town, gathering Jamie’s friends. The Boogeyman isn’t going to give up easily, however. He musters all his dark forces and unleashes them like a black sandstorm. Jamie stands his ground and tells the Boogeyman, ‘I do believe in you. I’m just not afraid of you!’ Just at that moment, the Sandman steps in to protect Jamie and his friends. The Sandman’s gold sand obliterates the Boogeyman’s black dust.

Scripted Talk

  • [PowerPoint slide 1]
    • [Enter the room wearing a Halloween costume and making some comical, spooky noises. After a while, stop acting spooky, and take off the part of your costume which covers your face.] Hang on a minute. This isn’t right. When I make this noise [make appropriate noise], you’re meant to be afraid – or at least pretend to be afraid. How do people’s faces look when they are scared? Let’s all have a practice [pause to inspect their expressions]. Right, I think we’re ready to try that again then. [Walk out of the room and re-enter under your spooky guise. Assuming the children play along, praise them for their efforts. You could give out some sweets to those looking particularly horrified.]
    • Soon I won’t be the only person dressed to distress.
  • [PowerPoint slide 2]
    • On Halloween, our streets will be lined with people wearing bed sheets and saying ‘Oooooo’. [click] A girl will knock on your door wearing a giant nose covered in hairy warts. [click] A boy will toddle up to the house wrapped head-to-toe in toilet paper, calling himself a ‘mummy’.
    • [click] Scary? Well, if those dressed as ghosts had really come back from the dead, then we might be alarmed; if the girl behind the witch’s mask was able to put a curse on us, then we’d be a little nervous; and if the boy posing as a mummy was really an unstoppable monster, then we wouldn’t want to hang around. But, since it is obvious that they haven’t got these powers, they are more funny than freaky. I guess we had better keep practising how to look afraid, so we’re ready to pretend when Halloween arrives.
    • It is easy to laugh at things when they don’t have any power. Let’s watch a clip from Rise of the Guardians and see how a boy named Jamie reacts when he comes face to face with the supposedly fearsome Boogeyman.

    • How did Jamie feel at the beginning of the clip? [Take suggestions – afraid.] How do you think he felt at the end of the clip? [Take suggestions – happy, relieved, strong.]
    • The gold sand that saves the children and the Guardians comes from another character in the film, a little but powerful person called the Sandman.
  • [PowerPoint slide 3]
    • The Boogeyman killed the Sandman earlier in the film, but here the Sandman magically reappears. [click] In the clip, it is his magical, gold sand that protects Jamie and the others. The Boogeyman is not strong enough to defeat the Sandman – even killing him doesn’t work! [click] Suddenly, the Boogeyman doesn’t look so powerful. Suddenly, he doesn’t look so scary. Suddenly, he actually looks rather funny.
    • The Bible describes a moment like this in our own history. Jesus was killed on a cross, but then he reappeared. By coming back to life, he showed the world that nothing was stronger than him – even death was not as powerful as Jesus.
  • Read Colossians 2:15 [PowerPoint slide 4]:
    • [Jesus] defeated the rulers and powers of the spiritual world. With the cross he won the victory over them and led them away, as defeated and powerless prisoners for the whole world to see.
    • Jamie tells the Boogeyman, ‘I do believe in you. I’m just not afraid of you!’ The Bible says that there are evil forces at work in the world, but it also says that Jesus has power over them. So, like Jamie, Christians do believe in evil; they’re just not afraid of it. Even death has lost its power, because Jesus proved that it does not have to be the end.
  • [PowerPoint slide 5]
    • So, this Halloween, why not have a laugh at evil’s expense? If we believe in something stronger than evil, then we don’t have to be afraid of it. Dress up, have a party, go trick-or-treating! Enjoy being silly instead of scared.

RESPOND

Reflection

  • Have you ever pictured a Boogeyman of your own? Or is there a monster that keeps appearing in your dreams? Sometimes we try to forget about our fears, but they just keep coming back into our minds. The Bible says that God can help us to overcome these fears. Here’s how:
  • Don’t worry about anything, but pray and ask God for everything you need, always giving thanks for what you have. And because you belong to Christ Jesus, God’s peace will stand guard over all your thoughts and feelings. His peace can do this far better than our human minds. (Philippians 4:6-7).
  • The next time you feel afraid, you could pray to God. Imagine God’s peace standing guard over you, and that monster might suddenly look rather small!

Prayer

  • I’m going to say a prayer now. If you’d like to join in, then say ‘Amen’ at the end, which means that you agree with what I’ve said.
  • Dear God, thank you for fun, for parties, for pumpkins! Thank you for Jesus, for his power, for his love. Thank you that by believing in Jesus, we don’t need to be afraid at Halloween – or any other time! Amen.
